The FMP slot-dies manufactured with micrometer accuracy so that uniform distribution of up to +-1% can be achieved. Before delivery, every slot-die is checked for uniform distribution and perfected with hand lapping processes to guarantee the desired result. The design and size of the coating distribution chamber are adjusted, depending on the physical properties of your coating. Heated slot-dies are also possible. The unique selling point of the patented, impingement-free FMP drying technology is that the drying air is homogenously distributed across specially designed porous plates and flows laminarly across the coating surface at velocities between 2 and 6 m/s. In impingement dryers, heating air typically passes through air distribution nozzles containing two very thin slits and hits the drying surface at velocities of 35 m/s or more. The larger outlet area of FMP nozzles compared to impingement nozzles allow similar heating gas volumes and drying rates to be achieved at much lower airflow velocities. Due to the low air velocities, the air volume can be increased further without damaging the coating, allowing for faster drying rates. The FMP drying technology enables a much gentler drying process with much more homogenous temperature and velocity profiles inside the dryer. This enables increased process control, decreased skin formation and diffusion limitations and increased product quality. This makes the impingement-free drying nozzle particularly interesting for thick or sensitive coatings.

Continuous drops of the same diameter? The monodisperse FMP drop generator makes it possible!

For some applications it is important to produce many single drops of the same diameter. This includes measurement instrument calibration, particle production via spray drying/ crystallization and the cross-linking of hydrogels. Conventional sprays always have a large number of different droplet diameters and large droplet diameter distributions. In contrast, the FMP droplet generator enables the continuous production of droplet chains with very monodisperse diameter distribution. The droplet diameter can be adjusted from 40 to 1000 µm. N4S-S2S high speed linear coating and drying line

Coating and drying process optimization trials can often not be run directly on production lines due to cost reasons. With this in mind, FMP developed a small and compact fully automatic pilot plant for the customer, enabling the application of single sheets via curtain coating at substrate speeds of up to 250 m/min. This enables the fast introduction of process improvements without requiring long development times at the large-scale plant. Likewise, sample coatings can be produced quickly, efficiently and cheaply in small quantities.

In-house technologies of FMP were incorporated into the production plant. All components were specially designed to meet the customer’s needs. The distribution system within the FMP slot-die is chosen from a large number of different geometries and sizes to achieve the best possible uniformity of the applied medium. For drying, FMP relies on its patented impingement-free convection drying technology. The unique selling point of this technology is, that it does not use an impingement jet and yet achieves drying rates at least as high as those of conventional dryers, resulting in a much gentler drying process. Conventional drying systems can also be installed on request.

With such a laboratory system, developments or further improvements, for example to introduce new technologies such as curtain coating, can be tested and optimized in detail on a very small scale. If the transition to the large-scale plant is ultimately made, a well-founded knowledge from the experiments can be used to guarantee a fast introduction of the new process technology with minimal development times.

Technical data

NANOCOAT High-Precision Coating Plant

Many technologies of the near future such as cloud cumputing, self-driving cars and 5G telecommunication networks will require very high data speeds. Such faster data speeds are expected to benefit all industries.

The high-precision linear coating system from FMP Technology (see Figure 1) is playing an important role in these developments. The FMP slot-die coating system is being used by a leading Swiss company to manufacture high-frequency, high-speed circuit boards with data transmission rates of up to one terabyte per second. With the FMP coating system, copper-clad, high-frequency PCBs are being coated as piece goods with high-precision UV-structural etch resists.

The unique challenge for this process is that the applied coating must already be in an optimal, operating condition shortly after the coating process starts. This can only be achieved if the conveyor system, precision table and slot-die are all perfectly coordinated with respect to one another. The precision table and coating nozzle must also be designed to maintain a surface homogeneity below 10 μm when quickly heated to 60 °C. Both points are necessary to achieve excellent coating uniformity in both the web and coating direction. Thanks to FMP´s expertise in precision mechanical engineering, these problems were solved.

These strengths allow the FMP coating slot dies to apply mirror-smooth coatings to copper-clad plates (see Figure below). The precise resist layers serve as the basis of the very fine, high quality electrical high-frequency structures shown in figure 2. We are pleased to make our contribution to ensure that our customer remains a leader in his field.

    LITHIUM-ION BATTERY PRODUCTION

    The field of battery cell production is currently experiencing a major upswing in investment in Europe. This can be seen in the planned billion-euro subsidy from the German government for battery production “giga-factories”

    FMP Technology GmbH is developing coating and drying units for battery cell production. In numerous projects with industry and research institutions, several coating and drying units have already been successfully realized. Among the challenges to overcome in the field of coating is the need to tailor slot-die coating units to highly particulate and viscous battery slurries and to prevent clogging from occuring. For maximum battery efficiency, it is also necessary to develop gentle drying processes for defect-free, uniform coatings. The impingement-free FMP drying nozzles ensure an especially gentle drying process for high quality, high efficiency coatings.

    FMP is also working to develop intelligent process monitoring (quality gates, etc.), in which new algorithms will be used to regulate coating and drying processes and increase efficiency and product quality.

    We are currently involved in the following research projects:

      Novel coating and drying technology for Li-Ion and Li-Sulfur battery coatings

      Evaluation of the technical and economic advantages of the open-cell module for lithium-ion and lithium-sulfur batteries with regard to stationary and mobile applications

    • DaLion-4.0:

      Prozessentwicklung, Breitschlitzdüsentechnik, diffusionsoptimierte Konvektionstrocknung, Process development, slot die technology, diffusion-optimized convection drying, automation

      Data mining as the basis of cyber-physical systems in lithium-ion battery cell production

    NANO-COATING

    Slot-die technology is often used when extremely highest precision and very uniform coating thickness are required. This is especially important for nanolayer films <1000 nm thick. For such thin films, precise dosing of small fluid volumes in the slot-die coating is a must. Thanks to extensive process know-how, FMP is able to design slot-dies that are able to precisely apply nano-coatings, even under such challenging conditions.

    16.12.2021 | Hydrogen Technologies with FMP Technology
    Project for a complete FMP coating & drying plant


    Thanks to our outstanding process knowledge and proven key technologies in the field of coating and drying, we were able to win the order to realise a complete roll-to-roll plant for the production of the anode and cathode coating on the membrane foil for fuel cells & electrolyzers. The pilot plant with a web width of 520 mm has everything the heart desires and opens up the possibility for the future plant operator to advance hydrogen technology in the areas of fuel cell and water electrolysis towards the mass market and to take on a leading role.

    The core components in the area of coating and drying are our precise FMP slot die and our proven and patented FMP LamiFlow dryer nozzle. This guarantees flawless and highly accurate coating followed by absolutely uniform, fast and excellent drying. Furthermore, the plant has additional protective film winders, a web marking system for traceability and extensive inspection systems, such as an in-line X-ray fluorescence measuring device for catalyst detection and a high-resolution camera system with automatic image analysis for process monitoring.

    Commissioning of the system is planned for mid-2022 in the R&D department of a leading global supplier to the automotive and mechanical engineering industries.

    VDMA Kick-Off Event “Produce Future Batteries – Transform4Production”.


    The technology roadmap “VDMA Battery Production Equipment 2030” provided the basis, now the cooperation will be strengthened and the work on future technologies intensified. From 24 – 25 November 2021, leading research institutes and industrial companies will meet in Oberursel on the topic of battery production. In addition to the product, from cell construction to individual battery modules and entire battery packs, the entire production process chain will also be discussed and analysed. FMP Technology will participate as a VDMA member and is looking forward to interesting discussions.

    14.11.2021 | FMP drying technology in Japan
    FMP delivers patented LamiFlow technology to Japan


    FMP Technology GmbH is delivering a dryer module with the patented LamiFlow technology to its Japanese sales partner Kofune Machine Works Co. Ltd. This will enable drying tests with water- and solvent-based liquids to be carried out at the technical centre in Noda-City, Chiba, from 2022 onwards.

    Kofune Machine Works Co. Ltd. is a Japanese machine and plant manufacturer in the field of coating and drying. Its core competence lies in particular in the application and drying of sensitive, thin-layer liquid films with low solids content for printed electronics. The aim of the long-standing cooperation with Kofune is to open up and further expand the Asian market for FMP.
